HIV Testing Updates
WESTCLIFF MEDICAL LABORATORIES, INC. (WML) is excited to offer you a new tool that will facilitate patient diagnosis for infectious diseases and subsequent treatments. Effective September 8, 2008, WML is pleased to announce a significant enhancement to our HIV-1 RNA quantitation assay. This newest PCR technology improves the accuracy and sensitivity for detection of HIV-1 viral load.
As a Roche Molecular Center of Excellence facility, we are adopting the gold standard for HIV-1 RNA quantitation testing via Roche’s latest technology -- a
real-time PCR for the determination of HIV-1 viral load. This platform offers an improved lower limit of detection (48 copies/ml), while extending the upper limit
to 10,000,000 copies/ml. This extended level of detection provides several
additional benefits to you.

PCR Advanced Technology Benefits:
• Reflex to an alternate assay is no longer necessary
• Improved turn-around time
• Simplification of ordering process with one (1) Test Code – 1514
• Methodology is an FDA approved procedure
Collection:
• 3ml of plasma (2ml minimum)
• Quantity – two 5ml lavender top (EDTA) tubes
Although the specimen requirement remains the same as what is currently
requested, short samples are less likely to be accepted by the instrument. As such, two full 5ml lavender top tubes are requested to prevent potential errors or cancellation that result from short draws.

Please be advised that the Test Code 1513-HIV-1 Quantitation Standard Method has been discontinued. After September 8, 2008, any requisitions
for testing with the discontinued code 1513 will automatically be converted
to Test Code 1514.
