Testing performed in the Molecular Biology Department utilizes a specific genetic sequence unique to an infectious virus or pathologic organism of interest to determine the presence or absence of infection or as an aid in monitoring therapy. All molecular methods offer enhanced specificity and many incorporate an amplification procedure that provides exceptional sensitivity compared to conventional laboratory methods. Molecular testing is available for specific viruses (e.g. HIV, HCV and HPV) and bacterium (e.g. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea).
